The right hand carries the main melodic line with steady eighth-note motion, while the left hand supports it with bass notes, held tones, and simple harmonic movement. This section gives the piece its main gavotte character.Measures 9–16 form the first contrasting episode. The texture becomes more chordal at the beginning of the section, and the left hand briefly moves into the upper staff. The music uses more register contrast and leads back toward the return of the main theme.Measures 17–24 bring back the opening rondeau theme.
