Short chords and little melodic replies give the opening a conversational character. Running figures, broken-chord accompaniment, trills, and sudden changes of volume expand that small idea into a substantial movement. The music repeatedly shifts between light, detached gestures and more continuous motion. The opening section introduces clipped chords separated by rests, answered by a rising phrase in the right hand. Around measures 10–15, the melody becomes more active, with quick descending figures and brief accents. By measures 20–30, longer right-hand phrases sit above a regular broken-chord pattern in the left hand. The contrast comes from the length and shape of the phrases as much as from the change in accompaniment.Around measures 40–50, stronger chordal writing and repeated notes interrupt the smoother texture. The closing portion of this first large section adds quick triplet figures and sustained trills. First and second endings lead either back to the opening or onward into the next part. The middle section moves the running figures through changing harmonies and registers. Around measures 70–90, the hands alternate between active passagework and emphatic chords. The music later becomes quieter and more hesitant before the opening gestures return. At measure 120, those familiar gestures appear under a different key signature; the original one-flat signature returns later on the same page. The last pages bring back the broken-chord accompaniment and the more forceful closing material. Around measures 180–190, repeated chords and quick figures build toward another trill-filled conclusion. The printed endings distinguish the return through this large section from the final close.Interesting fact: Beethoven briefly brings back the opening idea in a different key before restoring F major. That audible surprise is also visible in the change to a two-sharp key signature on the fifth page. How to earn points for this piece:Download or purchase the sheet music.Practice the piece carefully.
