Its character comes from short chords, precisely placed rests, and unexpected accents. As the theme changes, Beethoven keeps its outline recognizable while altering the spacing of the hands, the rhythm of the accompaniment, and the amount of movement inside each phrase.\r\nThe opening theme uses detached chords and a melody that often shares the same rhythm as the surrounding harmony. Small rests separate the gestures, while sforzando markings give particular notes and chords extra emphasis. The answering section introduces a trill and wider movement in the bass before returning to the theme's clipped articulation.\r\nThe first variation, beginning around measure 20, gives the upper line more continuous motion. The left hand supports it with connected chords marked sempre legato. Short runs and slurred figures bring a smoother surface, although the original phrase pattern remains audible. The next variation restores a more strongly separated character: left-hand notes alternate between registers while the right hand supplies chords and offbeat entries. First and second endings guide the repeated sections.\r\nAround measure 65, the right hand develops a lightly moving sixteenth-note pattern above a more spacious, connected bass. The theme is still present within this decoration. On the final page, the movement gradually returns to short, separated chords. Quiet phrases and rests lead toward an unexpectedly forceful final chord, giving the ending a clear touch of humor.\r\nInteresting fact: The opening instruction, “La prima parte senza replica,” tells the player to omit the repeat of the first part. The later printed repeats still shape the variations.\r\nHow to earn points for this piece:\r\nDownload or purchase the sheet music.\r\nPractice the piece carefully.
