A nearly continuous triplet figure surrounds a slow melody, while sustained bass notes give the music a broad foundation. Its subdued character depends on the separation of these layers: the melody often shares the right hand with the accompaniment, but moves at a much slower pace. The movement develops this small group of ideas across four pages and closes softly.\r\nOpening texture: The triplet accompaniment begins before the main melodic phrase. Low octaves support the changing harmony, and the upper melody enters with a distinctive dotted rhythm. The triplets continue underneath its held notes and repeated pitches. Quiet dynamic markings and long slurs keep the opening connected even when the bass moves to a different note.\r\nMiddle section: The broken-chord pattern travels through changing harmonies and registers. The bass is frequently sustained while the right-hand figure rises, falls, and changes its spacing. Accidentals become more prominent, and crescendos bring brief increases in intensity without replacing the underlying triplet motion. At several points, the upper notes form a more exposed melodic line above the continuing accompaniment.\r\nReturn and closing pages: The familiar dotted melodic idea returns over the same flowing texture. Later, the melodic rhythm also appears in the lower register, giving the bass a more prominent role. The final page gradually settles downward. The triplets continue almost to the end, then yield to quiet sustained chords, with very soft dynamics and a slowing indication at the close.\r\nInteresting fact: The title page of this edition prints the sonata’s dedication to Countess Julia Guicciardi above the music.\r\nHow to earn points for this piece:\r\nDownload or purchase the sheet music.Practice the piece carefully.
