First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Reinagle’s Allegro, Op. 1, No. 18, has a buoyant D-major character, with short melodic gestures and a lively two-beat pulse. The score’s Giocoso marking suits its playful mixture of slurred pairs, detached notes, and sudden gaps. The first section alternates an opening figure over held lower intervals with more flowing phrases above broken chords. Brief sixteenth-note descents add animation near the cadences. The second section begins more quietly, introduces chromatic coloring and rising sequences, then brings back the opening theme. Its final phrase climbs higher before descending into a firm close. Interesting fact: The melody repeatedly stops while the bass continues, making silence part of the piece’s recurring musical joke.
