The opening section, through its alternate endings at measures 16–17, pairs short rising gestures with higher notes separated by rests. The melody repeatedly returns to the same small chromatic step before building to a stronger cadence. Measures 18–33 introduce longer, accented melody notes tied across the beat, followed by flowing eighth-note descents. The bass maintains the dance rhythm as the upper line becomes broader and more continuous. Measures 34–49 bring back the opening’s interrupted phrases and graceful leaps. A final crescendo leads to a firm chordal ending, completing the repeated larger section. Interesting fact: In the central passage, tied melody notes cross the bar line while the accompaniment continues its regular waltz pulse, placing two different rhythmic patterns side by side.
