First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Op. 70, No. 43 is a bright Allegretto in 3/8, full of small chromatic turns, quick descents, and striking changes of register. A regular bass-and-two-chords pattern runs beneath the upper line. Measures 1–8 present the main figure and move it into a higher register. Short sixteenth-note turns grow into a descending run before the phrase pauses on a longer note. Measures 9–16 repeat the idea over a changed bass and harmony. Another high-register passage leads into two longer running figures, then a clear melodic resting point. Measures 17–24 lift the melody through successive high points and introduce further chromatic notes. Measures 25–28 sweep downward across a wider range before three separated rising notes and a high final note bring the piece to a crisp close. Interesting fact: The score uses octave signs to move familiar-looking notes into a much higher register, making register itself part of the piece’s changing character.
