First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.March, subtitled Song of the Lark, is a delicate, expressive miniature from Tchaikovsky's The Seasons. Little repeated-note turns and rising flourishes give its melody a birdlike character above a gently pulsing accompaniment. Two measures of accompaniment introduce the first melodic call. The upper phrase receives a lower answer, and their exchanges gradually become more animated. In the middle, quick ornaments, detached notes, and wider leaps carry the melody higher while the accompaniment keeps its soft pulse. The music then settles back into the opening call. Its final echoes pass into the lower voice as the upper chords become shorter and quieter, ending over a held bass harmony. The birdlike theme is not confined to the treble: it also appears in the bass, turning the piece into a conversation between high and low calls.
