Long melody notes, isolated bass entries, and small chromatic changes create a restrained, plaintive sound. The upbeat leads into measures 1–2, where the upper line settles low and moves by a semitone. The bass enters between silences rather than supplying a continuous accompaniment. Measures 3–4 allow the melody to rise, then hold it while the lower voice changes position. The texture remains only two notes deep. Measures 5–6 repeat the idea of a sustained note followed by a small chromatic turn. Measures 7–8 descend toward the final E, with the bass completing the cadence beneath the long closing melody note. Interesting fact: The historical heading quotes a line attributed to Bürger: ‘Ich bin so matt und krank’—‘I am so weary and ill.’
