Tchaikovsky's The Doll's Funeral, Op. 39 No. 7, is a small, solemn procession marked Grave. Repeated melody notes and dotted rhythms give its quiet opening the measured tread of a funeral march. The first section sets the melody over sustained low chords, briefly swells, and returns even more softly. Its closing phrase settles over a short chordal answer in the bass. The contrasting section introduces more chromatic motion and shorter, separated bass sounds. The texture gradually fills out and rises to a forte peak before diminishing into a return to the opening section. The printed D.C. al Fine brings the music back to its first section, so the final ending is the earlier quiet cadence rather than the last measure printed on the page.
