A quieter middle passage changes the balance between the two voices. Measures 1–8 alternate clipped melodic turns with repeated notes. Measures 9–16 introduce a softer phrase, an imitative lower response, and brief chromatic color. Measures 17–24 restore the opening material and its stronger dynamic. Interesting fact: The bass briefly changes to treble clef during the opening section, reflecting how far upward its accompanying figures travel.
