The Knight's Song begins as a hushed but resolute march in a lilting 6/8 rhythm. Short dotted gestures and emphatic accents give its low-register melody a distinctive, purposeful stride. The opening idea starts in the lower voice and receives chordal replies above. A much louder contrasting section moves through sharp chromatic harmonies before the quiet opening returns. An extended closing passage gradually loses force, shifting the activity downward and thinning the texture until a soft held harmony remains. Interesting fact: the opening is marked both very soft and resolute, showing that the piece's firm character comes from rhythm and articulation as much as volume.
