Knight Ruppert is a forceful A-minor character piece with a low, rumbling opening and strongly accented replies. Rapid repeated figures give its outer sections a stern, driving energy. The opening theme moves in parallel octaves before breaking into emphatic chords. A contrasting F-major middle section softens the sound and replaces the heavy accents with flowing, interwoven sixteenth notes. After this quieter episode develops through shifting harmonies, the original material returns in full strength and ends with three sharply marked chords. Interesting fact: the score places both hands in the bass clef at the start, concentrating the opening's weight in the piano's lower register.
