The Happy Farmer is a cheerful F-major miniature with a broad lower-register tune and light, detached chords above it. Its dotted rhythms and upbeat beginnings give the melody a springy, conversational character. Measures 1–8 state the bass melody twice, the second time more strongly. In measures 9–16, the tune also appears in the upper voice, with chromatic coloring and fuller exchanges between the parts. The closing phrases recall the opening contour, then settle into a short final cadence that becomes softer. Interesting fact: The best-known melody begins in the lower staff while the upper part supplies the accompaniment.
