The finale of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 4 is a Rondo marked Poco allegretto e grazioso. A gently ornamented melody returns between more animated passages of repeated chords, trills, scales, and broken figures. Its graceful opening contrasts especially strongly with a darker middle episode full of rapid notes and accented chordal replies. The pickup and measures 1–16 present the main melody in the right hand over a lightly moving left-hand accompaniment. Small ornaments and short slurs give the tune its rounded shape. The music then becomes more energetic, with repeated chords and quick ascending figures around measures 20–30. Around measures 35–50, trills and running figures lead through a brighter, more brilliant passage before the familiar opening melody returns. Its quieter accompaniment and curved melodic phrases briefly restore the opening character. Around measures 65–90, rapid groups of notes move between the hands in a darker episode. Strong chords interrupt the flowing figures, and the register expands. Printed repeats with alternate endings extend this passage before the motion slows and softens into another return of the main theme. Around measures 95–140, the melody reappears with changed details, followed by renewed repeated chords, trills, and scales. A further quiet return changes the harmonic color around measures 145–150. In the final pages, including measures 160–180, flowing left-hand figures support short right-hand gestures and intermittent accents. The energy gradually subsides into a quiet ending. Interesting fact: The finale ends softly, with the left hand still moving beneath separated upper notes shortly before the final chord.
