The second movement of Mozart’s Sonata No. 4, K. 282, consists of two minuets in three-quarter time. Menuetto I is in B-flat major; Menuetto II moves to E-flat major. Both dances use repeated sections, and the instruction at the end sends the player back to the first minuet. Their contrast comes from the shape of the melody and the changing activity of the accompaniment. Menuetto I, opening: Two short pickup notes lead into a lightly articulated melody. Small slurred groups alternate with detached notes and rests, while the lower hand supplies brief chords. The texture grows more animated when a running figure appears above a held lower voice. A descending upper line follows, then an ornamented chordal reply brings the first section to its repeat. Menuetto I, second section: Stronger chords and chromatic notes introduce a more emphatic passage. A quieter melodic answer follows, and the lower hand begins to contribute short moving figures of its own. Upper chords briefly sound above these lower replies. The earlier running pattern returns, followed by the familiar descending line and ornamented response. A short extension softens the cadence before the second repeat. Menuetto II, opening: Four quick pickup notes introduce a more flowing melody. The left hand alternates bass notes with close-spaced chords, creating a steady pulse beneath dotted upper figures. Longer triplet runs then broaden the melody while the accompaniment becomes more spacious. The phrase settles into shorter gestures before continuing onto the next page. Menuetto II, continuation and return: Repeated lower notes and chords support the upper line as it moves through changing registers. The first section closes quietly and repeats. The second section begins with lighter exchanges, then gradually restores the opening accompaniment and melodic shape. Triplet motion and dotted figures reappear before the final cadence. The direction to return to Menuetto I restores the first dance’s more clipped articulation and compact chordal texture. Interesting fact: The two minuets reverse the movement’s key relationship: the first uses B-flat major, while the second returns to the sonata’s home key of E-flat major.
