An a tempo meno mosso section begins at measures 43–48, and its small rising figure is repeated through measures 49–51. At measures 55–57, the texture becomes more agitated as the voices overlap and the harmony presses forward. Later returns of the opening material alternate with quicker scherzando passages and broader chordal statements. The final section reduces the motion to repeated chords and short rising lines before the music settles quietly in D minor at measure 106.
