Sustained chordal voices then move to the upper register while chromatic descending figures flow below (mm. 17–26). The opening texture returns and broadens through a crescendo before breaking into answering arpeggios between the hands (mm. 27–40), and fragmented figures marked morendo lead to a quiet series of widely spaced closing chords (mm. 41–47).
