The figures broaden into both staves as the harmony and dynamics change. Measures 21–40 continue the interlocking chord patterns, then gradually recede. Measures 41–43 rise and fall in two broad arpeggiated spans before a short closing chord. Fugue, measures 1–20: A lightly articulated upper subject is followed by entries in the lower voices. The lines overlap and pass between the staves. Measures 21–49 thicken and relax through further exchanges of the lines. Measure 50 briefly changes to 2/4; measures 51–68 return to common time and lead to a quiet sustained final chord.
