A solemn Adagio introduces Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum, Op. 44 No. 51. Broad chords, expressive small-note gestures, and held pauses give this Introduzione a spacious, declamatory character. The opening alternates sustained upper harmonies with short responses that move through the lower and middle registers. Chromatic shifts deepen the tension, and the texture gradually becomes more active through repeated chords and ornamental runs. A fuller upper melody rises above the accompaniment before the opening's measured gestures return. The last phrases diminish to pianissimo and rest on a held chord. An interesting fact is the piece's role in a larger design: the score identifies it as the introduction to a five-piece suite and prints Segue at the end, directing the music onward.
