Broad held notes and a more flowing line are interwoven in a steady 3/4 pulse, giving the piece a thoughtful, continuous momentum. The upper voices begin the dialogue before the bass enters, and the texture gradually expands into overlapping lines across several registers. Repeated sequences carry the ideas through chromatic harmonies, with quieter passages providing space between fuller, accented entries. The later pages explore altered forms of the thematic material before returning to a more settled texture. A rallentando broadens the final cadence into a held conclusion. An interesting detail is Clementi's explicit labeling of the transformations near the end: the score identifies the theme in its regular form, in contrary motion, and in retrograde, where its sequence runs backward.
