Short flourishes and rapidly alternating figures expand the texture, building toward a powerful return of the principal tune above sweeping accompaniment. The central section becomes calmer and changes to a two-beat meter. A small descending melody passes between upper and lower voices over sustained harmonies; chromatic shifts deepen its color before the opening march returns. In the coda, the march fragments gradually soften and spread across the keyboard.
