The opening leaves space between its curving melody and short accompanying chords. Longer descending lines and rising sequences gradually fill out the texture, leading to a strong restatement and streams of quicker notes that eventually fade. A much livelier central section introduces a low, dotted-rhythm tune over recurring bass notes and chords. It rises through several registers, builds to forceful accents, and then settles back into quiet fragments. The original tempo and opening material return for an extended reprise. The closing passage prolongs a rippling upper figure over widely spaced bass arpeggios, growing increasingly soft before a final melodic recollection and two sustained harmonies. An interesting detail is that the last quiet chord changes the opening minor-key color to a major-key close.
