Op. 176, No. 13 gives the bass a flowing scale melody beneath calm upper intervals. Its broad rise and fall makes the lower voice the main source of motion. Measures 1–8 alternate ascending and descending bass lines, with small chromatic turns near the cadences. Measures 9–12 intensify the ascent and briefly set moving lines against one another. Measures 13–16 transfer the running notes to the upper voice over sustained bass harmony. Measures 17–24 restore the opening arrangement and draw the lower line into a quiet cadence. Interesting fact: The middle section reverses the opening roles: the upper voice takes the running eighth notes while the bass becomes the sustained accompaniment.
