The tune begins in the bass, and the texture later opens into a dialogue between low and high melodic lines. The opening eight measures establish the lilting 6/8 movement. A dotted bass melody rises and falls beneath the repeated upper accompaniment, followed by a more changeable passage that slows toward a pause. The dolce passage beginning at measure 12 adds a distinct upper melody to the existing texture. A return to the lower tune is followed by another appearance of the upper singing line around measure 20. The closing measures lengthen the melodic notes and gradually fade. The repeated accompaniment continues beneath the increasingly sustained lines before the final quiet chord. Interesting fact: At its fullest, the piece contains three audible layers: a bass line, repeated inner intervals, and a separate melody above them.
