Op. 249, No. 138 is a springing triple-meter piece, with upward leaps and dotted rhythms giving its melody a lightly accented swing. Measures 1–16 repeat and extend a rising gesture over bass notes followed by paired chords. Long accented upper notes punctuate the phrases. Measures 17–32 preserve the melodic character but change the accompaniment to held bass tones with separate inner chords. Small eighth-note figures enliven the return, and fuller intervals support the final cadence. Interesting fact: The second half changes the sound of the accompaniment without changing its meter: the bass becomes sustained beneath the two upper chord pulses.
