Bach’s C-minor Invention builds a flowing conversation from a winding theme that begins alone in the upper voice. Its steady motion is colored by chromatic notes, ornaments, and overlapping phrases. The lower voice enters with the opening theme while the upper line continues, creating an extended imitation. The two parts later exchange rising sequences, descending runs, and more spacious gestures as the harmony moves away from and back toward C minor. A final return of the opening shapes leads to a sustained closing sonority. An interesting detail is the delayed second entrance: the lower voice waits through two full measures before beginning the theme, allowing its imitation to be heard clearly.
