Bach’s D-major Invention is a quick, lightly turning dialogue in 3/8 time. Small upbeat figures blossom into smooth runs, with the two voices continually answering and overlapping. The upper voice starts alone before the lower voice enters with the same curling idea. Sequences shift the material through different harmonies and registers. In the middle, extended trills hold one voice in place while the other continues its flowing line. The opening gestures return, followed by a final exchange of runs and a brief, clear close. An interesting detail is the trill passage: the sustained ornament moves from one voice to the other, reversing which part supplies the motion beneath it.
