First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Bach’s D-minor Invention sets quick rising and falling scales against broader broken-chord figures in a lively 3/8 rhythm. The two voices alternate between flowing motion and more spacious replies. The upper voice presents the scale idea alone, and the lower voice answers while the treble changes to separated notes. Sequential passages move the figures through new harmonies. Long trills later anchor one voice while the other continues running, first in the upper part and then in the bass. Renewed exchanges of the opening shapes lead to a short final cadence. An interesting detail is the contrast between the extended trills and the moving line around them: one pitch is prolonged while the surrounding harmony keeps changing.
