First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Bach’s Invention No. 5 contrasts a poised, ornamented theme with an almost continuous stream of quicker notes. The opening rests and separated tones give the main idea a clear profile against the flowing second voice. The upper voice introduces the theme while the lower voice develops a running figure. The parts exchange these roles repeatedly, carrying both ideas through changing harmonies and registers. Later sequences bring the lines into closer contact before the principal theme returns and the music settles into an ornamented final cadence. An interesting detail is the persistence of the quick-note line: it moves between the hands so that the music’s flow continues even when the main theme pauses.
