Bach’s G-minor Invention is a fluid two-voice dialogue distinguished by chromatic turns, continuous sixteenth-note lines, and small ornamental gestures. The opening rising figure is answered in the lower voice, and the two parts exchange running patterns with more spacious melodic shapes. Sequential passages repeatedly climb and fall through changing harmonies. A later return of the opening contour leads into a more ornamented closing exchange and a quiet, sustained ending. An interesting detail is the use of chromatic motion within the main idea itself: its closely spaced altered notes give the recurring figure a restless color whenever it returns.
