First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Bach’s A-major Invention has a buoyant 12/8 pulse and a brilliant surface of fast running notes. Repeated, ornamented tones provide a clear contrast to the rippling motion. At the opening, the lower voice supplies the rapid figure beneath the upper voice’s repeated notes and sustained tone. The parts soon exchange these roles. Short broken-chord replies interrupt the longer streams of notes, while sequences carry the dialogue through contrasting harmonies. The final exchanges bring the opening gestures together and settle firmly in A major. An interesting detail is that the running accompaniment becomes the leading idea when it changes voices, so the same material continually shifts between foreground and background.
