First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Bach’s B-flat-major Invention contrasts finely woven quick-note figures with broad, rising broken chords. The two voices repeatedly exchange these contrasting kinds of motion. The upper voice begins with a long, winding figure over spacious bass notes. Short echoes then pass between the hands before the lower voice takes over the extended running line. Later passages bring both parts into closer, more continuous motion, using sequences and alternating fragments to return to B-flat major. An interesting detail is the rhythmic mixture within the main figure: groups of very quick notes alternate with more open gestures, giving one melodic line several different degrees of motion.
