First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Bach’s B-minor Invention combines an ornamented, leaping idea with flowing runs in a tightly woven conversation between two voices. The upper part introduces the main gesture over separated bass notes, and the lower part soon takes it up while the treble continues in quicker motion. Sequences carry the running figures through changing harmonies and registers, repeatedly exchanging the two roles. Near the close, both lines recall the characteristic ornaments and contours before slowing into a bare final octave. An interesting detail is the ending’s restraint: after the busy two-voice exchange, the final sonority contains only the note B in two registers.
