First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Berens’s Op. 70, No. 12 is an eight-measure conversation between two single-note lines. Flowing upper scales alternate with repeated notes, while the lower part switches between held tones and small moving figures. Measures 1–2 pair an arching upper scale over a sustained bass with repeated upper quarter notes over a moving lower line. Measures 3–4 repeat the contrast at a different pitch level. The melody rises and falls again, then slows while the lower voice supplies a descending eighth-note answer. Measures 5–6 recall the opening exchange. Measures 7–8 vary the upper arch and let the lower voice complete the cadence beneath the repeated and sustained final melody notes. Interesting fact: Much of the apparent motion comes from the hands taking turns: when one line becomes still, the other becomes more active.
