Theme and Variation presents a German folk tune first in a plain, song-like setting and then in a more animated version. The theme uses mainly quarter notes and short slurred shapes. Widely spaced lower chords, followed by rests, leave the melody exposed as it moves through its contrasting registers. The variation fills the upper line with flowing eighth notes while retaining the theme’s harmonic outline. The accompaniment also becomes more continuous, and the closing descent gathers the added motion into a sustained cadence. Interesting fact: The historical collection numbers this theme and its variation together as No. 68 of Op. 300.
