Rebikov’s Chinese Figurine contrasts a small, high-register tune with a low, sustained accompaniment. Short melodic turns alternate with quick rising and falling runs. The opening melody stays high above the bass, then moves into a much lower register for a contrasting passage colored by flattened notes. The upper-register tune returns and repeats its compact phrases, ending without a large concluding gesture. An interesting detail is the unusually stable accompaniment: the same low interval recurs beneath almost the entire piece, while the melody supplies the changes of register and color.
