A long, sorrowful melody rests above quiet chords, with chromatic turns and lingering ties giving its phrases an expressive, unsettled shape. The opening song rises through small crescendos and falls back into softer answers. A lower melodic voice becomes more prominent beneath the treble line, creating a gentle conversation within the accompaniment. The middle passage brings shorter, more mobile phrases and a brief rise in intensity before a descending bass line leads back to the opening. In the coda, fragments of the melody move into the lower register and gradually fade, leaving the last notes almost alone. The final dynamic is pppp, following the marking morendo. This unusually soft ending extends the sense of the song slowly disappearing.
