First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Op. 70, No. 23 sets a broad, unhurried upper melody against a continuous stream of broken-chord eighth notes. The contrast between the two rhythmic layers gives the Allegro its forward motion. Measures 1–4 begin with rising half notes, then shorten the melody into a descending figure and repeated quarter notes. The accompaniment continues beneath the brief melodic rest. Measures 5–8 restate this opening phrase. The upper line settles onto repeated notes at the point marked Fine, while the broken-chord accompaniment makes a firmer ending. Measures 9–12 introduce a higher melodic starting point and a more changeable contour, including a chromatic inflection. Measures 13–16 answer this material and stretch the last upper note over a descending bass line. The printed Da Capo then returns to the opening and its Fine. Interesting fact: The final written bar is a turning point rather than the end of the performed piece: the Da Capo sends the music back to the earlier Fine.
