Russian Song is a sturdy, direct tune in F major, presented with full harmonies and a clear two-beat pulse. Its repeated melodic shapes give the piece the character of a song sung in successive verses. The opening statements use a largely chordal texture with held inner tones. As the tune returns, the bass becomes more active and adds short answering figures beneath the melody. The closing passage brings the voices back into closer rhythmic agreement and finishes with a firm, sustained harmony. Interesting fact: much of the melodic material repeats, but the increasingly mobile lower voice changes the character of each new statement.
