Baba Yaga is a quick, angular miniature with sudden accents, clipped chords, and a restless 6/8 pulse. Its darting figures create an unsettled, mischievous atmosphere. The opening sets short accented chords against a rising bass figure, followed by a more continuous stream of detached notes. The middle shifts the patterns through different registers and chromatic harmonies. The opening gestures return higher, then descending lines and increasingly quiet fragments bring the piece to an abrupt, sparse ending. Interesting fact: the final passage shrinks from active lines in both hands to isolated notes and rests, making the witch's musical exit strikingly brief.
