A bass note followed by two chords establishes the triple-time pulse, while small ornaments and chromatic turns keep the melody restless. The opening phrases descend toward restrained cadences, sometimes leaving the melody briefly alone. A sweeter continuation introduces triplets and longer melodic arcs before a chromatic descent closes the first large section. The contrasting A-major passage replaces the opening’s short gestures with sustained notes and flowing runs; fuller inner voices and a brief suspended pause enrich its later phrases. A return to the opening brings back the minor-key atmosphere and supplies the ending. Interesting fact: the final printed instruction is D.S. al Fine. The piece therefore ends at the earlier Fine marking after returning to the opening sign, rather than at the bottom of the last page.
