The opening's spacious bass notes and gently descending phrases establish a reflective atmosphere. Repeated double-note figures soon create a shimmering background, while a slower melodic line emerges beneath them. The moving figures pass between registers and expand into fuller chords, with brief changes of meter interrupting the otherwise steady flow. Broad descending gestures and interlocking phrases lead to a stronger climax. The texture then softens, and a widened final phrase recalls the opening before settling onto a long-held chord. An interesting detail: although most of the score is in 4/4, it includes short passages in 2/4 and 3/4 before ending in 6/4, allowing the phrases to contract and expand within the flowing texture.
