Schumann's untitled No. 26 has the character of a graceful conversation. A descending, chromatically colored phrase appears alone before soft chords join it, and the same idea soon moves into the lower voice. The opening section exchanges melodic and accompanying roles between the registers. The second begins with a broader tune above offbeat chords, pauses briefly, and brings back the original phrase. In the closing passage, the lines become more closely interwoven before settling into a calm F-major cadence. Interesting fact: the opening melody is first heard without accompaniment, then reappears in the bass, allowing the same phrase to take on a different color.
