The Stranger is an assertive character piece driven by clipped chords, dotted rhythms, and abrupt silences. Its vigorous opening gives Schumann's musical portrait an insistent, restless presence. The first sections develop the short opening gesture through rising sequences and chromatic chord changes. A quieter contrasting section alternates sustained chords with little flowing replies, although forceful interruptions soon return. The opening material comes back at length, and a separate coda recalls the quieter texture before building to a decisive series of accented closing gestures. Interesting fact: the contrasting section is marked Lo stesso tempo, so its broader notes change the sense of motion without calling for a different basic speed.
