First published: unknown. Completeness: unknown.Schumann's A Little Fugue pairs a flowing prelude with a lively contrapuntal movement in A major. Interwoven melodies give both sections their character, although their rhythms and textures differ markedly. The 2/4 prelude sends continuous sixteenth notes between the voices, with repeated sections, chromatic turns, and brief surges in volume. After a pause, the fugue introduces a detached subject in 6/8. Successive entries expand the texture as fragments of the theme travel through different registers, gathering into fuller chords near the close. Interesting fact: despite its single title, this piece contains two clearly marked parts, a Preludio and a fugue; the change from 2/4 to 6/8 makes their contrast audible as well as visible.
