Figurate Choral surrounds a broad hymnlike melody with continuously moving inner voices. Long notes in the tune and bass contrast with the flowing eighth-note figures between them. The opening phrases unfold over sustained harmonies, with fermatas marking the ends of the chorale lines. As the piece continues, chromatic notes and occasional triplets enrich the inner motion, and the moving line passes between registers. The final phrases widen in range before descending into a very quiet, sustained chord. Interesting fact: At several phrase endings, the inner voice keeps moving beneath a held chorale note, so the musical surface continues even where the tune comes to rest.
