The slow pace and frequent delayed entries give the phrases a reflective character. Measures 1–12 develop a gently rising figure into overlapping melodic voices above long bass tones. The second section intensifies the harmony with accented notes and chromatic lines, briefly leaving a single upper line alone. The earlier texture returns and becomes increasingly quiet, with small inner-voice motions continuing beneath held melodic notes. Alternate endings lead first back through the section and then to a very soft, slowing close. Interesting fact: The final bass note is held across the last two measures while the upper voices continue moving, allowing the ending to fade over a single sustained foundation.
