Schumann’s Popular Song contrasts a sorrowful D-minor melody with a livelier middle section. Rolled chords, ornamental notes, and expressive swells give the opening a vocal character. Measures 1–8 balance rising melodic phrases with descending, harmonized answers. Measures 9–16, marked Con brio, introduce sharper rhythms, short rests, and more chromatic movement. Measures 17–24 recover the opening mood, now bringing the melody into the lower part and surrounding it with fuller harmony before a held final chord. Interesting fact: The returning melody is reassigned to the lower voice, changing the color of the opening idea without replacing it with a new tune.
