Its restrained motion and dark register create an atmosphere of suspended expectation. The opening melody appears alone, then returns above a quiet bass tremolo. Long, tense chords replace the melody while the low oscillation continues. A brief passage in octaves leads to the opening figure in the lower voice beneath a new, widely spaced upper line. The final section raises that upper line through chromatic steps over a repeating accompaniment, then breaks off into silence before two softly rolled closing chords. An interesting detail: the opening melody's prominent C-sharp stands against the two-flat key signature, introducing the piece's uneasy harmonic color before any accompaniment has entered.
